Gel Finger Nail Polish - > after it dries - its dry - does not smudge - known for its resiliency and its beneficial protective layer of the nail - gel polish is definitely he better choice.
Here is the list of items you will need to get started:
- Wooden or Soft Files
- An Orangewood stick
- Nail Buffer
- Lint-free Cleansing Pads
- A UV or LED nail lamp for curing the nails
- UV Gel nail polish base coat
- UV Gel nail polish top coat
- UV Gel nail polish color of your choice
- Nail cleanser - for all brands, it is stated to either use their branded cleanser, or 99% isopropyl alcohol (IPA)
- Cuticle oil to help nourish the skin around your nail
How to Apply The Nail Polish
Begin by preparing your nail. To do so, simply push each cuticle back using the flattened end of the orangewood stick.
Continue by perfecting each cuticle using the pointed end of the orangewood stick.
Shape each nail using a soft or wooden nail file. Make sure you get around your cuticles and grooves too.
Use a buffer to remove all shine from your nail.
Wet a lint-free cleansing pad with cleanser and wipe each of your nails to make sure they are free of excess dust and oil.
Apply a layer of gel polish bond going from your cuticle to the nail's free edge.
Apply a very thin layer of gel polish foundation. Make sure you do not get this on your skin; if you do, immediately remove it.
Place your fingernails under the lamp to cure. The amount of time required depends on the lamp in use. A 36W UV lamp will cure gel nail polish in around 2 minutes. An LED nail lamp however, sure as the one produced by Hail Harmony however can cure the same polish in 30 seconds. Always follow the manufacturer's curing directions.
I highly recommend that you do four fingers at a time and then your thumb separately. Most lamps can accomodate four fingers comfortably. Again the professional lamps by Nail Harmony can cure five fingers at a time.
The surface of your nail will remain sticky. Some people choose to remove the sticky layer with the cleanser, before proceeding with the manicure. Others don't. The reason for removing the sticky layer before continuing is so the colored gel polish won't "slip". "Slipping" is when the colored polish slips or slides off the very tip of the nail. Slippage means the nail isn't properly sealed with gel polish and will not last as long as a properly sealed nail.
Apply a thin layer of gel color from the cuticle to the free edge making sure you cover the entire surface of your nail.
Hold nails under a UV or LED nail lamp and cure for 2 to 3 minutes or the amount of time recommended by the gel polish or nail lamp manufacturer's directions.
Apply a second coat of color to each nail to accomplish total coverage and place hands under the nail lamp to cure again. Apply a third coat of polish if you'd like an even darker shade of the color you're using.
Apply a thin coat of gel polish topcoat and cure the polish in a nail lamp again.
To remove the sticky feeling from the surface of your nails, simply put some cleanser onto a lint-free pad and wipe each nail from the cuticle to the free edge.
Apply cuticle oil on the skin around your nail and gently massage it into your cuticles; this can be done daily to moisturise your cuticles and nails.
How to remove gel nail polish at home
Now, let's say you learned how the application works and it has been long enough for you to be ready for a change of color. You are more than likely wondering how to take the UV gel nail polish off at home. Well, we have compiled a list of directions you can follow below; the best part about our list is that your nails will not sustain damage in the process if you do it correctly.
First, here is a list of items you will need to remove the polish:
- Cotton Balls
- Aluminum Foil
- 100% Pure Acetone
- A nail buffer
- Cuticle pusher
- Cuticle oil which you should already have
To remove UV gel nail polish at home it is suggested for you to set aside between 15 and 30 minutes while you follow these steps:
Cut your aluminium foil into10 or 12 3x3 inch squares.
Tear a piece of cotton wool off one of the cotton balls. You'll need enough to cover the surface of the nail. Make sure you have all 10 pieces separated if you plan on soaking off all 10 nails at once. If you are removing your gel nail polish by yourself, you'll probaly find it easier to soak off on hand at a time.
Using your rough nail file, lighlty buff the nail bed
and tips of the nails to break the gel polish seal allowing the acetone to penetrate all layers of gel polish that have been applied. Soak the pieces of cotton wool in acetone. An acetone or nail polish dispenser with a pump will come in very handy here. Make sure the cotton wool is completely saturated with acetone, then gently place on the nail bed and wrap in aluminum foil. Make sure to wrap it tight so that the foil does not fall off.
Wait about 15 minutes for the gel to soften
After the 15 minutes is up, one finger at a time, gently pull the foil and cotton wool off. Depending on how much is left on each finger - you can either put more acetone on the cotton ball you took off and replace the foil while you wait a few more minutes or you can use the orangewood stick to scrape the remnants off your nail. The key is not to force any remnants off because any stuck on gel will take a bit of your with it. If all the polish does not come off easy when you are scraping it, put more acetone on the cotton ball and replace the foil.
After you have finished each nail, put some acetone on another cotton ball and do a once over on each nail just to be sure everything is gone.
Use a nail buffer to smooth your nail back out.
Generously apply the cuticle oil to your skin and nails and allow it to soak in for the next one to two hours. This will help rehydrate your skin and nails after being subjected to the harsh acetone.

STOCKHOLM — Dr. Robert Lefkowitz, a professor at Duke University, and Dr. Brian Kobilka, one of his former students, have won the 2012 Nobel Prize in chemistry for their study of proteins that let cells in the body respond to signals from the outside.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said Wednesday that Lefkowitz and Kobilka have made groundbreaking discoveries on an important family of receptors, known as G-protein coupled receptors. About half of all medications act on these receptors, so learning about them will help scientists to come up with better drugs.
Lefkowitz is the first full-time Duke faculty member to win a Nobel Prize, and he said he shares the award with the university.
"Needless to say, I'm thrilled, I'm excited and I'm delighted to be sharing the award with a former student," he said. "It's a recognition of the (Duke) institution. ... In a very real sense, this is our accomplishment."
Lefkowitz has been a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Duke University Medical Center for 39 years. He also is the James B. Duke Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry at the university.
Dr. Nancy Andrews, dean of Duke's School of Medicine, said Lefkowitz has mentored so many scientists during his time at the university that he should be called "Coach L," much like Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski is usually referred to simply as "Coach K."
"There is no question that his scientific influence will last for decades," Andrews said.
Duke President Richard Brodhead called Lefkowitz "one of the world's natural sharers" of information.
"You made two contributions," Brodhead told Lefkowitz. "One was your discovery, and the second was your discovery of the powers of mentoring, the powers of developing the talents of others."
Kobilka, a professor of medicine and a professor of molecular and cellular physiology at Stanford University, was a post-doctoral fellow in cardiology in Lefkowitz' lab from 1984 to 1989.
"It really shows what kind of caliber institution Duke is," sophomore Russell Wagstaff said. "As a student, it is really encouraging because we know that these are the people who are teaching us. These are the people that are preparing us to go out and move forward after them."
"You go to this university and you are an undergraduate, but anything is possible,” sophomore Ethan Gottlieb said.
Lefkowitz was born in 1943 in New York and earned his medical degree in 1966 at Columbia University.
During a 45-minute news conference Wednesday afternoon, he regaled reporters and colleagues with stories of memorizing the lineups of the New York Yankees as a child and of joining seven classmates at Bronx Science High School as Nobel laureates.
He said he became interested in cell receptors while working at the National Institutes of Health in the late 1960s and was able to extract several concessions related to his research from Duke officials when they recruited him to Durham in 1973.
Lefkowitz described receptors and the proteins that interact with them in terms of fitting a key in a lock. The right key can open certain cells and allow chemicals like adrenaline and histamine to affect the cell's behavior.
Kobilka, a Minnesota native who earned his medical degree in 1981 at Yale University, has built upon his mentor's work by assembling crystalline structures of various receptors. Lefkowitz said that could revolutionize drug discovery by studying which molecules best fit a specific receptor and then synthesizing drugs to match that structure.
Lefkowitz said he almost missed being informed about the award early Wednesday because he wears earplugs while sleeping. His wife elbowed him awake at about 5 a.m., saying, "It's Stockholm calling."
He was in such a fog, he said, that it took him a while to realize that he shared the award with Kobilka, a notoriously shy person who, he said with a laugh, must have sweated through his own news conference at Stanford.
"I really hope (the award) changes me as little as possible," he said. "Frankly, I can't imagine it will."
The Nobel Prizes were established in the 1895 will of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite. Each award is worth 8 million kronor, or about $1.2 million.
In addition to Lefkowitz and Kobilka, three former Duke students have gone on to win Nobel Prizes. Two adjunct professors won while working at Wellcome Research Laboratories in Research Triangle Park, and a former professor won an award for work he did before coming to Duke.
